Therapy is no longer something mysterious and long-term where you lay on a couch and I sit in a chair behind you listening to you talk without giving you any feedback.  In the real world, you sit across from me and we talk together about what brought you in and how I can best help you.  If you are not sure about exactly what's bothering you or what type of help you'd like, I will ask you some questions and then we will talk about all the options that are available.  

I am a down-to-earth, honest, feedback-giving kind of therapist.  I will not just sit and nod and say "Hmm..can you say more about that..."  Humor is also important in therapy, as it is in life.  We will definitely laugh together at times.  If I make a mistake, I will say so.  If I don't know the answer, I will also say so, and will find it for you.  Please feel free to tell me directly if you don't like something I've said or that you need the room to be lighter or darker or whatever makes you more comfortable.  We need to be honest with one another and with ourselves for therapy to work.  We will build a unique kind of therapeutic relationship where trust and honesty are paramount.

Additionally, sometimes we just may not "connect" in the right way.  I will check in with you about this a number of times during our initial sessions.  Should you feel that another type of therapist would be a better "fit," I will help you find the type of person with whom you'll feel more comfortable.  It is my job as a therapist to not take this personally and to help you find someone else who suits you better.
